Ahhh, morning sickness. The quintessential pregnancy experience in which a woman heaves a whole plate of eggs into her own hair. We’ve come to expect is as a normal part of pregnancy, but is it?
Not necessarily, says Kristen of Food Renegade.In her Beautiful Babies e-course, Kristen challenges common myths about “inevitable” pregnancy woes (morning sickness, stretch marks, swollen ankles, etc.) and teaches mamas how to increase fertility, have a happier pregnancy and birth a gorgeous, healthy baby. Hands down it is one of the best classes I have ever taken, and today I get to share a little snippet from lesson #5 with you: How to prevent morning sickness!!!
This is no gimmick, ya’ll.  Kristen and I went to college together, and if there is one thing I learned about her there it’s that she doesn’t make claims she can’t back up via 10 independent sources and possibly citations from a dead language or two. The research on this is solid, so let’s jump right in!

Flip On The News . . .

morning sickness cure Any night of the week and you will find a smattering of pregnancy-related stories: Jedi forcefields that prevent moms immune system from attacking baby as an invader,  Snooki says breastfeeding is “like you’re a cow,” and a pregnant woman is criticized for jumping into icy waters to save a toddlers life.
Sandwiched between all that mess there are usually a few common theories about morning sickness floated here and there. Though they are commonly accepted as true, these theories are either incomplete or flat out wrong. Let’s look at a few of them:
  • Theory #1: Morning sickness protects baby from toxins – According to this perspective, “Doctors have long known that morning sickness — the nausea and vomiting usually experienced in early pregnancy — is actually a good sign of a healthy pregnancy, despite the discomfort it brings” (source). Nausea is an inner wisdom which prevents mama from eating foods that would be toxic to baby.
What’s wrong with this theory? Well, a couple of things: First, many of the foods women find themselves unable to eat are the very ones recommended by Dr. Weston A. Price as part of a nutrient-dense diet (pastured eggs, oily fish, fresh beef and lamb). These foods are far from toxic!  Second, plenty of women carry healthy babies to term without this so-called “protective” mechanism, and while consuming copious amounts of the foods typically avoided during morning sickness.
  • Theory #2: The body is adjusting to a flood of extra hormones – This is partly true, but the presence (or lack) of a particular nutrient may determine how intensely this change affects us (more on that below!)
  • Theory #3: It’s caused by low blood sugar  – This is also partly true (and eating constantly throughout the day helps!), but it’s a symptom, not the cause
  • Theory #4: You’re deficient in vitamin B6 & B12 – Many mamas find significant relief when they intentionally build up B-Vitamin stores, and that makes sense, because B6 and B12 aid in the absorption of the mineral which truly helps to prevent morning sickness – magnesium!

I know, ever since Cheeseslave wrote this post about magnesium deficiency it seems like the world’s gone mad with it! Did your dog’s tail turn blue? Magnesium deficiency! The bus was late? Magnesium deficiency! 
Like Ann Marie, I was pretty surprised to learn that even people who eat a nutrient-dense diet are at risk of magnesium deficiency, but her research is spot on.
“A hundred years ago, it was easy to get enough magnesium just by eating a variety of foods and drinking water. However, our modern soil is very depleted . . . [And] so is the water. ‘
Our human ancestors evolved in a world in which healthy drinking water came directly from streams, rivers, and lakes, rich in mineral content. The human body became reliant on obtaining a considerable proportion of its daily mineral needs from natural water sources.
Fast-forward to the twenty-first century. We obtain drinking water from a spigot or a plastic bottle. Pesticides and other chemicals seeping into the water supply have made everyone suspicious of water quality. As a result, municipal water-purification facilities have intensified their efforts to remove contaminants like lead, pesticide residues, and nitrates from drinking water. Unfortunately, these modern water-treatment methods also deplete drinking water of desirable minerals like calcium and magnesium.
Exacerbating this problem is that many Americans, distrustful of the purity and safety of municipally treated water, have added home water filters and purifiers that efficiently extract any remaining minerals from the water, thus converting “hard” into “soft” water. In fact, the manufacturers of these devices boast of their power to yield water free of “contaminants” — including minerals like magnesium. Thus, the magnesium content of the water that passes through most commercial filters is zero. (Source)‘”
So what does this have to do with morning sickness? I’m glad you asked!

You’ve Probably Heard By Now . . .

morning sickness cure That cortisol (the stress hormone) can cause weight gain, but did you know that’s because one of it’s main functions is to increase blood sugar? Yep, excess cortisol in your system takes your blood sugar through huge spikes and crashes, resulting in fatigue and nausea (aka morning sickness). Normally, magnesium balances cortisol levels by cleaning the excess from our blood.
BUT -
Pregnancy hormones inhibit our ability to absorb magnesium! This can lead to a vicious cycle in which excess stress hormones cause nausea, which causes stress, which we can’t fully remedy because the very thing we need we can’t fully absorb, and then you get this →
Ugh!

That’s Why The Secret To Morning Sickness . . .

Is to build up your magnesium stores before getting pregnant! You can can do this by consuming magnesium rich foods such as bone broth, seaweed, leafy green vegetables, properly soaked seeds and nuts, unrefined sea salt and soaked or sprouted whole grains. And because Vitamin D, Vitamin B6, Vitamin B12, and a little calcium are essential for magnesium absorption you’re going to want to eat foods that contain those nutrients, too.
(Note: According to Kristen, this is one of those instances in which Vitamin D supplements cannot replace sunshine. Studies comparing fermented cod liver oil vs. sunlight show that magnesium absorption goes WAY up when you get real sunlight! More info on how to get the benefits of sunlight without burning here.)
Of course, modern farming practices and water filtration systems have drastically reduced the magnesium content of the foods listed above, so you may want to add in a supplement as well. I personally use magnesium oil because it is much more easily absorbed  by the body than pills. Be careful to by from someone you trust, though, because some magnesium oils contain contaminants like mercury.

My Story

morning sickness cure My pregnancy with Katie was gloriously healthy overall, but I did have some morning sickness and awful problems with restless leg syndrome. Supplementing with magnesium helped control the RLS, but it wasn’t until after Katie’s winter solstice waterbirth that things finally resolved. Looking back, it makes sense that pregnancy hormones were preventing me from fully correcting a magnesium deficiency.
Of course, I had lots of time to work on it by the time I got pregnant with Micah, and the difference was amazing. No morning sickness at all and virtually no restless leg!
I have nerve damage in my legs from an old ballet injury so it’s not completely avoidable when there’s lots of pressure on my hips, but it was much, MUCH better!

HOW TO PLANT AN AVOCADO SEED






How To Plant An Avocado Seed

Growing avocados from seed is easy and they grow true to type
Summer is coming to a close, but that doesn't mean you can't take some of the summer with you into fall.

As gardeners, we are very aware of the seasonal fruit and vegetables we grow and consume, and even though year-round produce is always available in the grocery stores, it's immensely more enjoyable and satisfying to grow our own.

So if you enjoy avocados all summer long, with their creamy smooth texture and flavor as much as most people do, here is a way to grown them yourself and have your own tree that can be put indoors during the cold weather months and then put back out in the spring.

One of the best parts of this entire process is that avocado trees are easily grown from seed and they reproduce virtually true to type. Meaning that if you plant a Hass avocado, that's what you are going to get; something that doesn't always happen when you propagate plants via seed.

OK, so let's get started.
The Best Way To Propagate An Avocado

There are many ways to propagate and grow avocados, and growing avocados from seed, usually brings to mind a school project of sticking toothpicks into an avocado pit and then putting it in water.

That's fine, it can work, but there is a better way to do it, because when roots are grown in water and then transplanted into soil, they don't always do very well. Also, not all avocado seeds will germinate this way.

So let's sidestep these problems and grow them in soil to begin with. The following process is fast, easy and works really well.





How To Plant An Avocado Seed Step-By-Step

1. Choose a healthy, undamaged seed

2. Soak it in hot water 106° to 130°F (40° to 52°C) for 30 minutes. This will help stop any infection from avocado root rot.

3. Cut a thin slice - about 1/2 inch (1 cm) - from the pointed end with a sharp knife

4. Then dip the wound in a fungicide

5. Sow the seed in a 6 inch (15 cm) pot of sandy soil with the cut end slightly above the soil surface

6. Place it in a warm location 65°F (18°C) or warmer in bright, but indirect sunlight

7. Keep moist, but not wet, or else it will rot

8. Germination takes about 3 to 4 weeks

9. The seedling can be grown on in a container until it is about 12 to 16 inches (30 to 40 cm) tall, then it should be ready to be moved to its final location, or potted up into a larger container













Where To Plant And Care

Now that you have a healthy seedling, you need to plant it up either in a container or out in the garden, if you live in a warm climate.

Avocados generally take cold down to 30°F (-1°C) and after that they will get frost damage. Some avocados like a Zutano or Mexicola will take down to 20°F (-7°C), but for most areas that is a pretty warm winter.

If you live in a cold weather area that gets well below freezing in the winter, then plan to pot your seedling up in a container and plan to move it to a sheltered location during the colder months of the year.

Always plant avocados where they will get full sun, and in well-drained soil. They don't like wet feet, so allow the soil to dry a bit in between waterings.

Young trees need only light feeding so only feed twice - once in the spring and once in the summer with a good avocado-citrus fertilizer, which can be found at any garden supply center.

When planting in a container you will have to increase the container size as the tree matures, but the size of the tree can be controlled by regular pruning, plus there are dwarf varieties that do well in containers too.

You will eventually have your tree in a large wine barrel or other large pot, so plan to have that container on wheels so it can be moved easily when needed.

Note: Seed raised trees start to bear fruit when they are between 5 and 7 years old.






Cross Pollination

In order to get fruit you will normally have to have two different varieties. Avocado varieties have flowers that are categorized as either type A or type B, depending upon on the time of day they open when, and when pollen is released.

Although many single trees do produce fruit, you are better off having one of each type.

Conclusion

So if you're one of those people that just love summer, and you love avocados, now you have a way to hang onto both!

And while it will take time for your tree to produce its first fruit, as a gardener, just growing the tree in anticipation is usually just as much fun as eating the final product.

TODAY TONIGHT PERTH - LYME FORUM

Their faces are wracked with anguish. Men, women and children, desperately ill with a disease they've been told doesn't exist. Strangers, with remarkably similar stories. Lyme disease usually starts with a tick bite. A tick with Lyme will transfer the infection through the skin, into the human blood stream. It'll move like a cork screw, often launching multiple attacks on different parts of the body. The effects can be devastating. There's often, but not always, a terrible rash. What you can't see are the headaches, fatigue, muscle pains, shortness of breath, lack of concentration and memory, sensitivity to light and noise.

So, why does no-one believe them? Well, Australian health authorities say there's no evidence that ticks here carry the infection. So most doctors won't diagnose Lyme disease, despite mounting evidence from patients who know they contracted it here. Last year, we reported on Bonnie Burns. So sick, she was barely able to walk. With Perth doctors refusing to acknowledge Lyme, Bonnie was forced overseas for treatment. Sadly, she says nothing's changed. "I'm still having seizures so at least once a month I'll head down to the local hospital because if I don't go they'll go why didn't you come down to the hospital when you had a seizure, we could've fixed you, we could've helped you out. Oh, every time I got there you make me walk back out that door, make me feel like an absolute idiot about myself, that I've got this sickness that's in my head." Bonnie says without government and medical support, patients are helpless. "We can't just keep helping ourselves with the invisible medication, the invisible money, the invisible information that we're trying to feed ourselves to give ourselves hope. The government seriously needs to get off their asses, stop worrying about stupid mining taxes and upping the GST, put that money into the medical system, seriously it's a joke."

Theda Myint is another sufferer we've reported on before. Once a broadcasting student with a bright future, Theda has been sick for 13 years, initially told she had Chronic Fatigue Syndrome. "Somebody saw the Today Tonight program and they said that girl's got Lyme disease." And she has. Like so many others, Theda had to send her blood overseas for testing. Her Mum, Carol. "The biggest thing for me is that Theda was incredibly depressed and talked all the time about taking her own life and not wanting to be alive and nothing helped in the medicines she was given anti-depressants or anything and then we're now having some treatment from a doctor in America and she's treating with pre-cursors to help the brain and Theda's depression has improved tremendously."

"I've seen just about every specialist in Perth trying to get to the bottom of why I was so unwell, this was before I had children, unfortunately I passed it on to two of my daughters and they are now very, very sick." Jenny's heartbreaking story shows what mis-information can do. "I'm really really angry, I'm gonna get upset now because if I had been treated appropriately when I was asking for help with the right anti-biotics I wouldn't have passed it on to my daughters."

There are entire families with Lyme disease and still health departments won't act. Kate says "My Mum was bitten in NSW, 27 years ago and she got the bullseye rash and because they denied it. Did she pass it onto you? Yeah. She went to the doctor with the rash and they were like I dunno, and they just sent her home and she's given it to her three children." The W.A. government maintains there's "little evidence" that Lyme occurs here and says treating people with long term anti-biotics can be "falsely reassuring" to people who believe that they have a chronic infection. But there IS hope and there are treatments available. No longer suffering in silence, this weekend they'll take to the streets, part of an international protest for Lyme disease awareness.
